require rescue centres to carry out pain and behaviour assessments before euthanasia.
The Issue
We want the government to make it law that no dog in a Uk rescue or re homing charity may be euthanised unless :
•A qualified veterinary surgeon has carried out a RECENT pain and health assessment, and
• A qualified canine behaviourist has carried out a FAIR behavioural assessment.
This would help ensure that dogs are not put to sleep unnecessarily due to untreated pain or misunderstood behaviour.
Every year dogs are euthanised in centres, sometimes without a full understanding of their health or behaviour. Pain can often cause aggression or anxiety, and with the right treatment and care many dogs can go on to live happy and healthy lives.
Requiring standardised veterinary checks and behavioural assessments would save many lives, improve welfare standards across all rescue centres, and restore public confidence in the rehoming system.
In a recent case, i personally worked for a rehoming centre where they unfairly euthanised 2 dogs in the space of a week.
One dog had been suffering in pain for many months without a full vet check being carried out. With the right treatment and care he could have had a better chance at being back to full health and having a better chance at finding a home.
The other dog, had some behavioural challenges but never had a full recent behaviour assessment, which was promised by the centre manager. He was very unhappy and nothing was attempted to help him have a better chance at finding his forever home.
