Require public restrooms to remain open at Parks Tacoma

The Issue

Due to recent budget cuts at Parks Tacoma, the management has decided to close restrooms across the district to save money. This decision, while financially motivated, significantly affects all park users, especially those who rely on these facilities the most: senior citizens, children, and people with disabilities.

Imagine an elderly person enjoying the fresh air in a park, or a family with young children out for a day of play and recreation, only to realize that basic restroom facilities are unavailable. This situation imposes an unnecessary burden on many and effectively limits accessibility to public spaces.

Public parks and recreational areas should be welcoming and accessible to all, not places where we have to wonder whether basic amenities are available. Restroom facilities are not just a convenience; they are a necessity that allows everyone, regardless of age or physical ability, to enjoy the beauty and peace offered by our parks.

We understand the financial constraints faced by Parks Tacoma, but there must be a better solution that doesn’t compromise the accessibility and enjoyment of public spaces. By reallocating resources, seeking partnerships, or even creating volunteer programs, it's possible to keep these restrooms open without unduly impacting the budget.

Moreover, closed restrooms detract from the cleanliness and hygiene of the parks, which can lead to larger issues down the road, potentially costing more in long-term maintenance and cleanup efforts.

It's crucial for us as a community to advocate for the resources that allow everyone to enjoy our city's parks without restriction. Keeping public restrooms open 7 days a week during normal operating hours at all Parks Tacoma facilities is not just a matter of convenience; it is about maintaining dignity, ensuring accessibility, and upholding the community values we cherish.

Join us in urging Parks Tacoma to find alternate solutions and prioritize the reopening of public restrooms. Your signature can make a difference in ensuring our parks remain inclusive and accommodating spaces for every resident and visitor. Please sign this petition to voice your support!
