The Issue

I am deeply concerned about the safety of our beloved pets and feel compelled to speak up. Like many others, I have a dog who isn't very welcoming to new people, often appearing aggressive. However, once he's familiar with someone, he's nothing but a loving companion. But recently, with the shooting of a doodle by the LAPD, I've become fearful. The thought of my dog being shot by an officer misunderstanding his behavior is terrifying.

Instances of police officers using lethal force against dogs perceived as aggressive are not uncommon. According to a study published in the Journal of Urban Affairs, over 10,000 dogs are shot by law enforcement officers each year in the United States alone. This staggering number highlights the urgent need for change in police protocols.

Police departments need to prioritize non-lethal methods, like using TASERs, to incapacitate animals instead of resorting to deadly measures. TASERs offer a safe alternative that can prevent unnecessary deaths while giving officers a way to protect themselves from truly dangerous situations. By enacting this policy, we can ensure the safety of both officers and our furry friends.

Furthermore, police training programs should include comprehensive instructions on reading canine body language and behavior to better assess threats. This is essential to avoid tragic misunderstandings and to give peace of mind to countless dog owners like myself, who live in fear of a tragic encounter.

We must act now to change current practices and protect innocent animals from unnecessary harm. Please join me in urging the Los Angeles Police Department and police departments nationwide to adopt this life-saving policy. Together, we can be the voice for our pets who cannot speak for themselves. Sign this petition and help make our communities safer for both people and animals.
