Phoenix Police Chief Matt Giordano fired both officers and said, according to KTVQ, "No community members should suffer what happened here. We recognize this erodes community trust." That's a start, but firing two officers after the fact does nothing to stop the next unrecorded stop from happening the same way.

Body cameras exist so an officer's word isn't the only account of what happened on a dark street at 11:30 p.m. When cameras stay off, victims have no proof, investigators have no evidence, and departments have no way to catch a problem before someone gets hurt.

Phoenix residents deserve a police department where every stop is recorded, every recording is preserved, and turning off a camera during a stop is treated as a serious violation on its own — not just a footnote to something worse. This isn't about assuming the worst of every officer; it's about making sure the ones doing right by their badge have nothing to hide, and the ones who don't have nowhere to hide either.
