The Issue

Every parent deserves to know when their child has been exposed to a contagious illness—especially one that can pose serious risks to vulnerable populations.

In Massachusetts, there is currently no consistent, statewide requirement for schools or childcare providers to notify families when a child tests positive for Parvovirus B19 (commonly known as Fifth disease). While this illness is often mild in children, it can have serious and even dangerous consequences for pregnant women, unborn babies, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Without timely notification, families are left unaware of potential exposure—removing their ability to take necessary precautions, seek medical guidance, or protect vulnerable household members.

We are calling on the Massachusetts General Court to introduce and pass legislation that:

  • Requires schools and licensed childcare facilities to notify parents and guardians of confirmed cases of Parvovirus B19 within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Ensures notifications are anonymous, protecting the privacy of the affected child and family
  • Provides clear public health guidance to families on symptoms, risks, and when to seek medical advice
  • Establishes consistent statewide protocols so all families receive equal protection, regardless of district or provider

This is not about fear—it is about transparency, prevention, and protecting public health.

Parents cannot make informed decisions without information. Schools cannot support families without clear policy. And vulnerable individuals cannot protect themselves without timely awareness.

We urge Massachusetts lawmakers and the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to act now and close this gap in communication.

Sign this petition to support stronger health notification policies and safer school communities across Massachusetts.

In honor of Deanna and Bobby—and especially Baby Andrew—this petition is a reminder of why awareness matters. No family should ever be left without the information needed to protect the people they love most. Their story is not just personal—it is a call to action to ensure better communication, stronger safeguards, and a future where preventable risks are taken seriously.
