Require Outdoor Breaks For High School Students

Require Outdoor Breaks For High School Students
The Issue
As a high school student, I've found myself and many of my peers feeling the overwhelming need to step outside during the school day. The confines of the classroom, while essential for learning, often do little to satisfy our natural need for sunlight and fresh air. This lack of outdoor exposure not only elevates stress levels but also diminishes our ability to concentrate and feel genuinely happy, as fresh air and sunlight are crucial for increasing serotonin levels.
The positive impacts of outdoor exposure are widely recognized. Vitamin D, commonly referred to as the "sunshine vitamin," is produced by the body in response to sun exposure. This vitamin is essential for maintaining healthy bones and supporting our immune systems. Additionally, time spent outside and in nature has been proven to reduce stress, improve mood, and enhance focus, which are all critical factors for students striving to succeed academically.
Schools in areas with ample year-round sunshine, such as Southern California or Florida, have already implemented specific outdoor break times to promote health and wellness among students. It's time for our school district to step up and follow suit. By incorporating daily outdoor breaks into the high school schedule, we can foster a healthier, more productive, and happier student body.
I urge the school board and administration to set up scheduled times during the school day dedicated to outdoor time. Not only will this improve the physical well-being of students, but it will also contribute to a more positive and effective learning environment. Let's take advantage of the natural resources available to us to uplift the mental and physical health of our students.
Join me in this vital shift towards a more balanced and health-conscious educational environment. Sign this petition to demand outdoor break times for high school students. Together, we can ensure that the next generation of students are empowered with health and happiness.
