Require MoDOT to install sound and safety barriers along I-44 , Main St to Connecticut St

The Issue

I recently had a conversation with the project manager of Project Forward 44 in Joplin, MO, scheduled to expand in Spring of 2027. During this discussion, I was informed that a noise survey had been conducted and analyzed. The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) concluded that installing sound walls along Main St and Connecticut St was too costly and not effective enough in reducing interstate noise. Instead, MoDOT plans to place guardrails in select locations. They even suggested planting trees to mitigate noise, although they recently cut down most of the barrier trees already in place.

This decision is not acceptable, and it's personal for me because the noise impact affects our lives daily. The residents along Main St and Connecticut St deserve the same consideration and protection from traffic noise as any other community. If trees are suggested as a noise reduction method, there's no reason a well-designed sound wall wouldn't work even more effectively. We need sound barriers to help maintain the quality of life in our neighborhoods, ensuring peace and quiet in our homes.

Studies from various credible sources have shown that sound barriers not only help in reducing noise pollution significantly, but they also protect public safety by reducing traffic sounds that may otherwise distract drivers and pedestrians. Moreover, these barriers add undeniable value to residential properties by improving the living environment.

In addition to sound barriers, safety barriers are crucial. Accidents along highways can have devastating impacts on the safety of our neighborhoods. Adequately installed safety barriers can save lives by preventing vehicles from veering off roads and into residential areas.

We urge MoDOT to reconsider their current plan, prioritize the wellbeing of Joplin residents, and include sound and safety barriers along Main St and Connecticut St as part of the Forward 44 expansion project. The implementation of these changes will provide real, measurable benefits in terms of noise reduction and safety for decades to come.

Please sign this petition to urge MoDOT to take the necessary steps to secure the structural and auditory safety of our community. Your support can make a difference by ensuring that our voices are heard and acted upon.
