Require Mandatory, Random Drug and Alcohol Tests for Elected Officials and law makers

The Issue

As individuals who've closely observed the malpractices in politics, we know that there have been numerous accounts of officials indulging in substance abuse, which not only leads to impaired judgement but also fosters dishonesty, corruption and questionable decision making. One of the critical substances being abused – alcohol, surprisingly carries the same potential damage as hard drugs. However, it is often ignored.

We are advocating for a policy that requires all elected officials to undergo random drug testing, including alcohol. Officials who fail two tests should be placed on unpaid leave and be required to attend a drug and alcohol rehabilitation program. A return to their duties would solely be contingent upon successfully completing the program. Any official failing drug testing for a third time, will face dismissal, forfeiture of their government pension and would be perpetually banned from holding any future public office.

Alcohol and drug abuse is a widespread issue in our society, with the National Institute on Drug Abuse estimating 19.7 million American adults (aged 12 and older) battled a substance use disorder in 2017 - almost 74% of which involved alcohol abuse [National Institute on Drug Abuse]. Therefore, the probability that the same issue penetrates the realm of politics statistical overwhelming.

By building this safeguard, we hope to ensure that our elected officials remain vigilant and discharged of any impairing substances – leading to more accurate, fair and honest decision-making.

We believe in the promise of transparency and accountability in public service. Join us in making this policy a reality – together, we can create a cleaner, more effective political landscape. Please, sign the petition.
