Require Mandatory Firearm Disclosure and Safety Protocols in Florida Workplaces

Require Mandatory Firearm Disclosure and Safety Protocols in Florida Workplaces
The Issue
On a day like any other, my son Chadwick Maxwell Fey -17 years old went to work full of life and plans for the future. He never returned home. He died due to the presence of an unsecured firearm at his workplace while working inside Sawgrass Mills Mall—one of the largest and busiest shopping malls in Florida, visited daily by thousands of employees, families, and tourists. This devastating loss is compounded by the fact that there were no clear disclosures, safeguards, or enforceable safety protocols in place to protect him, his coworkers, or the countless members of the public present in the mall that day. This tragedy exposed a critical gap in workplace safety standards across Florida—especially in high-traffic public spaces. No employee should unknowingly enter a workplace where a firearm is present without transparency, safety measures, or accountability. No family should have to learn—after a loss—that their loved one was exposed to a preventable danger in a place meant to be safe for work and for the public. Florida has long upheld the Second Amendment, and the right to bear arms deserves respect. However, respecting that right must coexist with prioritizing safety. When firearms are present in workplaces—particularly in crowded public venues like shopping malls—they must be disclosed and responsibly managed. Mandatory firearm disclosure and enforceable safety protocols can prevent tragedies like the one my family has endured. Evidence consistently shows that transparency and structured safety guidelines reduce workplace injuries and fatalities. Applying these principles to firearm presence and storage in workplaces would significantly reduce risk not only to employees, but also to the general public who visit these spaces every day. We are calling for mandatory policies that require employers to clearly disclose the presence of firearms in the workplace and to implement enforceable safety measures. These should include proper firearm storage, employee training, and regular safety audits—especially in public-facing environments such as malls, entertainment venues, and large commercial centers. Together, we can close dangerous gaps in the law and prevent future loss of life caused by negligence and lack of oversight. By signing this petition, you are standing up for safer workplaces and safer public spaces across Florida. Please sign and share this petition to urge lawmakers to take action now—before another family is forced to endure a preventable tragedy.
