Require Mandatory CPR Training for Parents Before Leaving Hospital with Newborns

The Issue

I am a parent whose life flipped upside down when my baby girl stopped breathing not once but twice, collapsing into unconsciousness. Thankfully, I knew what to do in that harrowing situation, and my daughter is alive today because of it. My experience has made me realize, not all parents are equipped with the knowledge of Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) when faced with a similar situation. Hence, I implore you to consider this: CPR training should be mandatory for all parents before leaving the hospital with their babies.

Roughly 12,000 children (infants to 18 years) go into cardiac arrest each year in the United States. Tragically, survival for children who experience a cardiac arrest out-of-hospital is less than 1 in 10. However, odds pre-hospital can triple if CPR is administered immediately (American Heart Association).

This is not just about preventing fatalities but also about providing parents with the recourses required when confronted with a dire situation. Standardizing mandatory CPR training for all new parents before they leave the hospital could significantly impact these horrifying statistics.

Your signature can help drive the change we desperately need. We want to ensure that every parent is equipped with skills that could potentially save their child's life. No parent should feel helpless when their child's life hangs in the balance. Let us change the narrative of our children's safety. Please, sign this petition today.
