The Issue

My son was recently hit by a car while using the crosswalk at the intersection of West Court Square and West Washington St.  This unsettling experience not only affected our family deeply, but it also highlighted a critical safety issue that affects countless others in our community. This dangerous crosswalk has been a known hazard for years, and it's heart-wrenching to witness numerous pedestrians facing similar life-threatening situations.

According to data from the local police department, there have been over 25 reported incidents involving vehicles and pedestrians at this particular crosswalk in the past two years alone. This alarming statistic underscores the urgent need for systematic intervention by our local government to ensure the safety and well-being of our community members.

The current state of this crosswalk is perilous, with inadequate lighting, and a lack of proper signage to alert drivers. These issues contribute to reduced visibility and heightened risk, especially during the evening hours or under adverse weather conditions. It is imperative that our local authorities take immediate action to rectify these deficiencies and implement effective safety measures.

Proposed solutions include repainting the crosswalk lines to enhance visibility, installing better lighting fixtures, and placing clear, prominent signage to warn approaching drivers of the pedestrian crossing. Additionally, considering the installation of flashing beacons could significantly improve driver awareness and pedestrian safety.

We are calling on the local government, specifically the Department of Transportation, to prioritize this issue and allocate necessary resources to address the crosswalk's hazards. Community safety should never be compromised, and it is within our collective power to prevent further accidents and tragedies.

Please join us in urging our local government to take swift and decisive action to make this crosswalk safe for everyone. Sign this petition to demand safer streets in our neighborhood. Together, we can make a real difference.
