The Issue
One dispatcher mistake nearly cost my daughter her life. When she went into anaphylaxis, we called for help, but the ambulance took 45 minutes to reach our home. In those critical moments, we had to act fast, administering two doses of epinephrine ourselves, doing everything we could to keep her alive while we waited. A deputy from the sheriff’s office, who was nearby, came to help calm the situation and support us but he did not have access to epinephrine. If he had carried an additional dose, it could have been the crucial backup we so desperately needed.
Epinephrine works within minutes, is simple and safe to administer, and can immediately halt a severe allergic reaction. It buys critical time until advanced medical care can arrive, making it an essential tool for emergencies.
We are advocating for a law that mandates all law enforcement officers, especially those in rural areas, to carry epinephrine auto-injectors. This initiative would save lives in emergency situations, protect children, families, and vulnerable individuals, and significantly improve emergency response in rural areas where medical help takes longer to arrive. It would also strengthen trust between law enforcement and the communities they serve, showing that officers are prepared to handle not just criminal situations, but health-related emergencies as well.
The cost to equip officers with this life-saving tool is estimated at only $50–$150 per officer annually. This is a small price to pay to ensure that they are prepared for allergic emergencies. These moments require immediate action, and our officers should be empowered to make a difference when every second counts.
Let us ensure that no family has to face what we did without the immediate support that could make all the difference. Please sign this petition to help require law enforcement to carry epinephrine auto-injectors and make our communities safer for everyone.
