Require itemized fuel receipts with tax details in Indiana
The Issue
As a consumer and taxpayer in Indiana, I believe we have the right to know exactly what we are being charged for when purchasing fuel, especially the taxes and fees associated with these transactions. However, current fuel receipts often do not itemize federal and state taxes, leaving us in the dark about the actual breakdown of costs. This lack of transparency prevents us from holding both the retailers and our government accountable.
Understanding what we pay in taxes on fuel is not just about awareness—it's about empowerment. When receipts do not clearly list the taxes, it takes away our power to question and understand how and why we are charged certain amounts. This omission can shield governments from being questioned when tax changes occur and also allows retailers to add hidden fees without accountability.
According to the American Petroleum Institute, federal taxes on gasoline amount to 18.4 cents per gallon, while diesel is taxed at 24.4 cents per gallon. In Indiana, additional state taxes apply, which can significantly influence the final price at the pump. These amounts should be made explicit on every receipt to ensure clarity and transparency.
In many European countries, itemized receipts showing tax contributions for fuel purchases are mandatory. Implementing a similar system in Indiana would be an important step towards greater consumer protection, enabling residents to become more informed about where their hard-earned money is going.
We urge Indiana lawmakers to introduce legislation requiring all fuel receipts to clearly itemize federal and state taxes. This small but crucial change will enable each of us to make more informed decisions and advocate for fair taxation, ultimately leading to improved governance and accountability.
Sign this petition to demand transparency and protect consumer rights in Indiana. Together, we can make a difference.
