The Issue

My heart sank this morning when I received a text from my child saying he felt like he was going to die because he was so cold. He had to wait outside in the freezing morning weather for more than 15 minutes before being allowed to enter his school. As a parent, this is a terrifying reality knowing that my child—and countless others—are exposed to extreme weather conditions that jeopardize their health and safety.

Michigan winters are notorious for their harsh and frigid conditions. With temperatures often dropping below zero and wind chills making it feel even colder, it's unimaginable to have our children stand outside without appropriate shelter. Prolonged exposure to these conditions can lead to frostbite, hypothermia, and other serious health concerns.

Currently, many schools in Michigan have policies enforcing students to wait outside until a specific time before classes start. While this may have been fine in milder conditions, it does not account for the unpredictability and severity of Michigan winters. Our children deserve better.

We urgently call upon Michigan’s Department of Education and local school boards to amend their policies to ensure that children have access to indoor waiting areas during extreme weather conditions. This policy change would require schools to open their doors early, providing a safe haven for students as they arrive.

We propose that whenever the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit or when wind chill warnings are issued by the National Weather Service, schools should automatically allow students to wait inside. This simple change can make an invaluable difference in ensuring the health and safety of our children.

No child should be left in the cold. Sign this petition to demand immediate action from our educational leaders to protect our children during Michigan's harsh winter months. Together, we can ensure a safer, warmer environment for students in the state.
