Require ID and consultation for over-the-counter opioid sales

Require ID and consultation for over-the-counter opioid sales
The Issue
Having worked in the pharmacy sector for several years, I have witnessed firsthand how alarmingly easy it is for individuals to purchase addictive medications such as opioids over the counter. The frequency with which some patients buy these medications without proper guidance is not just troubling, it's terrifying. Unfortunately, this widespread access has fostered a dependency in many cases, preventing those same individuals from seeking the necessary medical intervention that could truly help them.
This petition advocates for the introduction of a policy requiring customers to present identification and consult with a pharmacist when purchasing over-the-counter opioids. Furthermore, it's imperative that these transactions are logged through PharmOutcomes, allowing General Practitioners (GPs) to be informed about medications patients are buying, complementing their prescribed treatments.
The misuse of over-the-counter opioids has become a silent epidemic, contributing to a significant public health crisis. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), opioid overdoses accounted for nearly 50,000 deaths in 2019 alone. Many of these incidents are linked to the overuse of medications initially bought over the counter.
By implementing a requirement for identification and consultations with pharmacists, we can ensure that purchasers understand the risks involved and receive education on the appropriate use of these medications. The inclusion of these transactions in PharmOutcomes will facilitate better communication between pharmacists and GPs, ultimately providing individuals with safer, more comprehensive healthcare.
Our medical system needs to prioritize patient safety over convenience. As members of our communities, we must urge our health authorities to enact these changes to avert further harm. Please, lend your voice to this critical cause and sign this petition to make over-the-counter opioid sales safer for everyone.
