The Issue

As a high school student in New Jersey, I recently undertook a neuroscience course that opened my eyes to the detrimental effects of minimal sleep on the brain. Experiencing first-hand the challenges of juggling sports, extracurricular activities, and academics, all while striving to maintain a healthy sleep cycle, has made it abundantly clear that the current early start times of high schools are not conducive to our well-being.

Research in the field of neuroscience indicates that teenagers require between 8 to 10 hours of sleep for optimal functioning and development. The American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and other reputable organizations recommend that high school start times should be no earlier than 8:30 AM to align with adolescent sleep patterns.

However, many schools in New Jersey still cling to start times as early as 7:30 AM. This leaves students struggling to gain adequate rest after their evening commitments. Insufficient sleep can lead to numerous health issues such as decreased immune function, increased risk of mental health disorders, and an overall decline in academic performance.

Additionally, pushing start times forward could have a positive ripple effect on the entire school community. Teachers would benefit from teaching more alert and focused students, while parents could see improvements in their children’s well-being and concentration levels without disrupting the typical family routine. Such a shift would benefit individual students’ lives and the educational community as a whole.

Numerous school districts across the country have successfully implemented later start times to remarkable effect, seeing improved attendance rates, less tardiness, and generally happier, healthier students. Recently, Bridgewater High School has realized these advantages and implemented later start times to maximize the growth and health of it's students. With the support of the youth, more districts in New Jersey can adopt these changes to prioritize the well-being of students.

I urge the New Jersey State Board of Education and local school districts to consider the scientific research and the proven benefits evidenced by other schools, and to act in the best interest of students’ health and future. By delaying high school start times by just one hour, we can foster a healthier, more productive, and balanced life for so many students.

Please join me in advocating for this important change that will benefit students today and for generations to come. Sign this petition to push New Jersey high school start times by an hour.
