Require grocery stores to provide expiring foods for free

The Issue

We The People Ask The Administration To Require Grocery Stores to Provide Expiring Foods For Free.

The cost of food has skyrocketed over the past year, and many people in my community are struggling to make ends meet. Even fast food, which was once an affordable option, has become out of reach for many families. I have seen firsthand how hard it is for people to put food on the table, and it's heartbreaking to witness.

While people are struggling to afford the basics, grocery stores frequently throw away perfectly good food just because it has passed its "best used by" date. In California alone, tons of food end up in the trash daily, contributing not only to food waste but also harming the environment.

Requiring grocery stores to make this food available at no cost to residents would relieve the financial burden on struggling families. It would also help reduce food waste significantly, benefiting both our communities and our planet. France has been doing this successfully since 2016, showing that such initiatives can work effectively.

If grocery stores partner with local food banks and charities, they can create a streamlined process for distributing these items. This action not only helps those in immediate need but also creates awareness about food sustainability and responsible consumption.

We urge California lawmakers to adopt legislation that mandates grocery stores to donate or provide expiring foods free of charge to residents, as a step towards reducing waste and supporting community welfare.

By signing this petition, you can help ensure that no one has to go hungry while food that could nourish a family ends up in the trash. Join us in fighting food insecurity and promoting ethical food distribution in our state. Please sign and support this cause to make a real, impactful change in the lives of countless Californians.
