The Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) just approved Georgia Power's contract with OpenAI for a massive data center planned in Effingham County, near Savannah, the largest single-customer deal the utility has reported since 2024. Much of that contract remains redacted, and Georgia families have no way to know how much of the cost will land on their own electric bills.

At a rare public meeting held outside Atlanta, in Savannah, residents packed the room to confront commissioners directly. One resident put it plainly: "There's a reason you're named the Public Service Commission and not the Georgia Power service commission or the OpenAI service commission," according to Bill Wright of Pooler, Georgia. "Your name tells you where your loyalty should lie."

Georgia families are already stretched thin by years of rate hikes, and now a single corporate data center deal threatens to push bills even higher, while the public is kept in the dark about the terms. Even PSC chair Jason Shaw has acknowledged that Georgia Power needs to share more unredacted information with regulators, let alone the public footing the bill.

The Georgia Public Service Commission must require Georgia Power to release the full, unredacted terms of its data center contracts and guarantee that data center companies, not everyday ratepayers, cover the cost of the added grid infrastructure these deals demand. Every Georgian deserves to know what is driving their power bill, and no household should subsidize a corporation's server farm.
