Require full community and environmental impact of proposed AI data center
The Issue
I love my community, and I want to keep it safe and clean for all of us who call it home. That's why I am deeply concerned about the University at Buffalo's planned $1.5 billion AI data center. While advancements in technology are important, they must not come at the expense of our environment or our health.
Data centers have a well-documented history of significantly increasing water consumption and pollution in the areas where they operate. The sheer scale of resources they consume can put a real strain on our local environment. Many communities across the country have already felt the negative repercussions. We need full assurance that our community will not face similar impacts.
One practical step that must be taken before any construction begins is comprehensive soil and environmental testing. This includes assessing potential contamination risks and examining how local ecosystems might be affected. With such significant investment, transparency and accountability are crucial. We have the right to understand any environmental risks and to mitigate them proactively. Along with community wide effects of the data centers resource usage. (Fresh water and electricity)
Conducting these tests before proceeding with construction is not just reasonable; it's essential. Let's ensure a safe and healthy future for our community and act responsibly towards our environment. By supporting this petition, you are advocating for a thorough and responsible planning process that prioritizes the well-being of our community.
Please join me in urging the University at Buffalo and local officials to prioritize our health and the environment by conducting these essential tests before moving forward with this project. Sign this petition to demand full soil and environmental testing for the proposed AI data center along with direct communication on concerns regarding it's effects on the community as a whole (i.e. environment, fresh water usage, effect on utility costs, how that money could have been used to directly improve lives.)
Local representative Jack Kavanaugh, and state representative Sarah Whiteway have been contacted about concern and what testing has been done. Neither have responded with any information on the project.
