This petition topic hits close to home for every woman: the provision of sanitary products. As a woman, having a menstrual cycle is not a choice, it's an unavoidable part of our biology. Unlike contraception, which is freely available and revolves around choice, sanitary products, a necessity for hygiene and health, are not free.

According to a recent survey by the charity Plan International UK, 1 in 10 girls in the UK have been unable to afford sanitary wear. This limits their engagement in social and academic activities and infringes upon their basic human rights. Moreover, the global pandemic has worsened the situation, making menstrual hygiene management an even larger challenge for those facing financial struggles.

It’s alarming that basic sanitary products - crucial for female hygiene - are seen as a luxury rather than a necessity. These items are taxed in many countries as 'non-essential', a perspective that needs to change. Condoms, lubricants, pregnancy tests are given out for free in many places around the world, and so should sanitary products which support women during their menstrual cycle.

One thing is clear: No woman should ever have to question her access to sanitary products due to financial constraints. It's time we call on lawmakers to prioritize female health and hygiene. We urge the necessary change to make all sanitary products free.
