Require Food Companies to Disclose Cross-Contamination Risks for Allergens!

The Issue

Millions of Americans, including children, live with life-threatening food allergies. Despite the dangers, food companies in the U.S. are not required to disclose if their products are processed in facilities that also handle major allergens like peanuts and tree nuts.

This lack of transparency forces families to guess whether a product is safe, increasing the risk of accidental exposure to allergens. While some companies voluntarily use “may contain” warnings, there is no regulation or consistency, leaving consumers vulnerable.

We are calling on the FDA and lawmakers to require all food manufacturers to clearly label cross-contact risks for the top nine allergens. This simple step would protect millions of people and provide families with the clear, accurate information they need to make safe food choices.

Why This Matters:

• 1 in 13 children in the U.S. has a food allergy, and accidental exposure can be deadly.

• The FDA already regulates allergen ingredients, but not cross-contamination risks.

• Other countries, like Canada and the EU, have stronger allergen labeling laws—the U.S. must catch up!

• The FASTER Act (2021) added sesame to the major allergen list, proving that change is possible when we advocate for it.

What We Are Asking For:

We urge the FDA and U.S. Congress to update food labeling laws and require companies to disclose cross-contamination risks on all packaged foods. Every family deserves to know if a product is made in a facility that processes allergens—no one should have to gamble with their health.
