The Issue

Florida Drivers Deserve Protection: Require At-Fault Drivers to Carry Adequate Insurance

In 2020, my life changed when I was involved in a car accident caused by another driver.

I did not cause the accident, but I was the one left dealing with the consequences.

The driver who hit me carried only the minimum insurance required under Florida law. At the time, I also carried only the minimum required coverage because I believed that if I followed Florida’s insurance requirements, I would at least have basic protection if someone else caused an accident.

I learned the hard way how wrong that assumption can be.

My vehicle was a total loss. I had to purchase another vehicle. I was left dealing with medical bills and the financial consequences of injuries from an accident I did not cause.

Meanwhile, the person who caused the accident was able to move forward while I was left carrying much of the financial burden.

That is not fair, and Florida drivers deserve better protection.

Florida’s insurance laws should not allow someone to cause a serious accident without having adequate liability insurance to protect the people they injure.

I am asking Florida lawmakers to reform our auto insurance requirements and require drivers to carry meaningful bodily injury liability coverage so that when a driver causes an accident, the innocent victim has a source of insurance coverage for their injuries.

Florida should also review its minimum property damage requirements to ensure they reflect the actual cost of vehicles today.

No one should do everything legally required of them, get hit by another driver, and then discover that the person who caused the crash did not have enough insurance to cover the damage they caused.

This isn’t about punishing drivers.

It’s about responsibility.

If you cause an accident that injures another person or destroys their property, there should be adequate insurance in place to help make that person whole.

I cannot undo what happened to me. I cannot erase the medical bills, replace the time I’ve lost, or change the financial impact this accident has had on my life.

But Florida can change the law so that fewer people experience what I did.

I am asking Florida residents, accident victims, families, healthcare professionals, first responders, attorneys, insurance professionals, and anyone who believes in accountability to sign this petition and urge the Florida Legislature to strengthen Florida’s automobile insurance requirements.

Being the victim of an accident should not mean becoming the victim of inadequate insurance laws, too.

Please sign and share this petition. Help us tell Florida lawmakers: if you cause the crash, your insurance should protect the person you hurt.
