Require Fitchburg Public Schools to provide ICE training

Require Fitchburg Public Schools to provide ICE training
The Issue
As a parent of children who attend Fitchburg Public Schools and a community member actively involved in after-school programs, ensuring the safety and well-being of our students is my top priority. The presence of federal agents, such as ICE and Border Patrol, on school property is a pressing concern that necessitates preparedness to protect our students' rights and safety, and that of the teachers and administration in the building.
Schools should be a sanctuary where students feel safe and supported, regardless of their background or immigration status. Unfortunately, recent reports have highlighted instances where students across the nation have faced intimidation and fear due to the unexpected presence of federal agents on school grounds. According to a report by the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), schools are not obligated to cooperate with ICE, making it imperative that school staff and students are educated on their rights and appropriate procedures. The recent event at Roosevelt High School in Minnesota has a lot of parents and students feeling unsafe.
To address this issue in Fitchburg, I urge the Fitchburg Public Schools system to implement comprehensive training for both teachers and students. This training should cover protocols on how to respond calmly and effectively in the event of federal agents appearing on school premises. Teachers should be empowered with the knowledge to guide students through such situations confidently, ensuring their legal rights are protected. Additionally, students should be taught how to handle these incidents, emphasizing their right to privacy and the importance of seeking support from trusted adults.
Implementing this training will not only equip our schools with the necessary tools to handle such scenarios but also cultivate a sense of safety and trust within the community. Each child deserves to learn in an environment free from fear and uncertainty, and it is our responsibility to maintain this standard.
Join me in calling on Fitchburg Public Schools to prioritize the safety and education of our children by integrating ICE and Border Patrol preparedness into the school's emergency response plans. Signing this petition will urge our school district leaders to take this critical step towards ensuring the safety and security of all students and staff. Together, let's transform our schools into a secure environment for every student.
