The Issue

I was diagnosed with breast cancer at a young age (37) and was told treatment needed to begin quickly. Although fertility preservation was discussed, I felt rushed to make a life-changing decision while facing the fear and uncertainty of a cancer diagnosis. As a public school teacher, I had insurance, but fertility preservation was not covered. Once I learned the cost, I felt I had no choice but to start treatment and put my dreams of future parenthood aside.

After treatment, I revisited my options only to discover that egg retrieval and fertility preservation were still not covered by my primary insurance or Medicaid. The cost was overwhelming, leaving me feeling helpless and heartbroken.

No cancer patient should have to choose between fighting for their life and preserving their chance to have a family. I urge Virginia lawmakers and insurance providers to make fertility preservation accessible and affordable for cancer patients across the Commonwealth.
