The Issue

I work at a 7-Eleven store and regularly take on the third shift, which runs throughout the night. During these late hours, I am responsible for cleaning, restocking shelves, and maintaining general store upkeep, tasks that typically aren’t demanded as heavily from the workers on the first and second shifts. Night work presents its own set of challenges: the overwhelming fatigue that comes with working through the night and facing the inherent dangers that nighttime work brings.

It is unfair that those who endure the graveyard shift receive the same pay as those in the earlier shifts despite the increased workload and higher risks. The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that night shift workers experience a higher rate of workplace injuries, fatigue, and health risks. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Labor recognizes that working at night can disrupt sleep patterns, leading to a higher chance of accidents.

Additional compensation for third shift workers is not only about fairness, but about valuing the safety and health of those who keep services running when others are asleep. It rewards the dedication and efforts required to work during these unconventional and strenuous hours.

7-Eleven can set a precedent by acknowledging the unique challenges of the third shift and implementing a wage differential, which has been demonstrated to improve morale and productivity in workers. This would mean recognizing that employees working these hours are essential to the seamless operations of the company and should be compensated accordingly.

Let’s urge 7-Eleven to lead the way in adopting fair pay practices for night workers, honoring the indispensable service they provide. Sign this petition to demand a more equitable pay structure for third shift workers at all 7-Eleven locations across the country.
