Require equitable treatment for all eating disorder sufferers

Require equitable treatment for all eating disorder sufferers
The Issue
For over 30 years, I have battled with eating disorders, a struggle that has not just affected my physical and mental health but has led to severe consequences, including suicidal thoughts and actions. Despite my pleas for help 23 years ago, the necessary care and support were not available, and I have witnessed friends tragically lose their lives to these same disorders.
Eating disorders, which include anorexia, bulimia, atypical anorexia, purging disorder (OSFED), binge eating disorder, and ARFID, impact countless individuals regardless of their size or specific diagnosis. The different manifestations of these disorders make personalized and timely treatment essential. However, countless sufferers continue to face barriers when seeking the comprehensive care they need.
According to a report from Beat, the UK’s eating disorder charity, approximately 1.25 million people are experiencing an eating disorder at any one time in the UK. Despite the magnitude of this issue, many are left without access to person-centred treatment and adequate medical monitoring. The current system often fails to provide the right support at the right time, leading to prolonged suffering and negative health outcomes.
We urgently need change. We are calling on policymakers and healthcare providers to ensure that all individuals with eating disorders, regardless of diagnosis or physical appearance, have access to person-centred treatment promptly and for as long as necessary. This should include comprehensive medical monitoring to ensure holistic recovery.
Support the call for equitable access to life-saving treatment by signing this petition. Let's prevent further lives from being lost and help those who suffer find the compassionate care they desperately need.
