When my son approached his school with enthusiasm and passion to try out for the volleyball team, his hopes were shattered when he was told that volleyball is exclusive to girls. This experience not only discouraged him but also highlighted an important issue of inequality in our school sports systems.

In Lake County, Florida, volleyball is often solely offered as a girls' sport, depriving boys the opportunity to engage in a game that encourages teamwork, strategic thinking, and physical fitness across genders. All students, regardless of gender, should have the right and opportunity to play sports like volleyball. This isn't just about my son—it's about every student who dreams of hitting that perfect volley or making a game-winning serve but finds their way blocked by outdated policies.

According to the Women's Sports Foundation, boys and girls who participate in team sports exhibit increased confidence, higher academic performance, and better health outcomes. By allowing only girls to participate in volleyball, we are not just taking these opportunities away from boys like my son but also fostering an environment that reinforces outdated gender norms.

Our schools are meant to be inclusive spaces that nurture every child's potential. Therefore, I am calling on the Lake County School Board to implement policies that allow both girls and boys to participate in volleyball. This policy change would ensure equal opportunities for all students interested in volleyball, foster inclusivity, and promote gender equality.
