I am a passionate student who adores the outdoors. No season, not even the bitterly cold Minnesota winter, can extinguish my love for the open air. However, in my school in Edina, MN, we are currently held in from recess if the temperature drops below 32 degrees Fahrenheit. This means I, and many others who share my enthusiasm about being outside, are often confined indoors throughout the chilly seasons.

Being outside has numerous health and educational benefits. The American Academy of Pediatrics holds that "Play in an outdoor, natural environment allows children to explore both their world and their own minds." It's not just about a love for the outdoors, but our physical and mental health, our academic success, and our happiness.

Our proposal is simple, yet could have profound effects on the wellbeing and happiness of Edina students: Edina schools should only restrict outdoor recess if temperatures drop below 0 degrees Fahrenheit. This would allow us more opportunities to experience the refreshing outdoor air, even during winter months, and take full advantage of the benefits that outdoor play brings.
