Require dumpster companies to put mesh covers over drainage holes

Require dumpster companies to put mesh covers over drainage holes
The Issue
As a local wildlife rehabilitator, it is heartbreaking to witness the preventable suffering of animals in our community. Myself and other dedicated rehabbers have too often been called to scenes where squirrels are trapped with their heads stuck in the drainage holes of dumpsters. Each call is a direct result of a lack of basic precautions by dumpster companies to prevent these unnecessary and distressing entrapments.
Despite our efforts to address this issue through calls and emails to the responsible parties, our concerns have been ignored, and no action has been taken. This failure to act puts wildlife at risk, causing harm to innocent creatures seeking food or shelter. We can no longer allow this to happen.
The solution is simple and effective: require dumpster companies to install mesh screens over their drainage holes. A small mesh cover would prevent wildlife from being trapped while still allowing dumpsters to function effectively. It's a cost-efficient measure that can save numerous animals from a painful fate and support the wellbeing of our local ecosystem.
Statistics show that the installation of such covers has successfully reduced animal entrapments in cities where they have been mandated. By following suit, our town can join others in prioritizing the safety and preservation of wildlife.
This call for action is not only about protecting wildlife but also about showing respect for our environment and the creatures with whom we share it. The community relies on dumpster companies to act responsibly and ethically.
We implore local authorities and the dumpster companies themselves to take immediate action in implementing these measures. Join us in making a stand for our local wildlife and ensuring that humane and simple solutions are enforced.
Please add your voice to mine and the many others demanding change by signing this petition. By doing so, you contribute to a future where animals are protected from unnecessary harm. Together, we can make a difference.
