Require daily recess in all Illinois schools

Require daily recess in all Illinois schools
The Issue
As a middle schooler at PKMS (Prairie Knolls Middle School) in Illinois, I have personally experienced the toll that a lack of breaks during the school day takes on students. Many of my classmates and I strongly believe that having a daily recess would not only benefit our physical health but also positively impact our mental well-being and academic performance.
Across the state of Illinois, middle school students are spending significant hours seated in classrooms without sufficient opportunity to move, relax, and reset their minds. Studies from reputable institutions such as the American Academy of Pediatrics have shown that regular breaks, including outdoor recess, are critical in helping students concentrate better, reduce stress levels, and improve overall school climate.
Currently, elementary students enjoy the clear benefits of daily recess, yet middle schoolers are frequently denied this essential break under the assumption that they have outgrown the need for free play and physical release. On the contrary, adolescents require just as much, if not more, time to relieve stress and recharge, as they navigate the more complex academic demands and onset of puberty.
Incorporating a daily recess for middle school students won't just promote healthier lifestyles. It encourages social interaction, teamwork, and conflict resolution skills, which are crucial to developing well-rounded individuals. Imagine a future where students are more engaged, happier, and productive in their studies. This future is possible, and it starts with implementing daily recess periods in middle schools across Illinois.
We urge the Illinois State Board of Education to mandate daily recess for students. By setting a statewide standard, we can foster an educational environment that prioritizes well-being as much as it does academic excellence. Let us work together to make this positive change, ensuring every middle schooler in Illinois can benefit from the rejuvenating effects of daily recess.
Please join us in our effort to enrich the lives of middle (and other) school students. Your support is vital in showing that this initiative matters not just to us students, but to our schools and communities as a whole. We ask for your signature to help bring daily recess to all Illinois middle schools.
