Require Congress to stay in session during funding deadlocks

Require Congress to stay in session during funding deadlocks
The Issue
As an individual classified as an essential federal worker, I know firsthand the immense stress and challenges a government shutdown imposes. My colleagues and I work tirelessly to fulfill our mission to protect and serve our country, yet when the government shuts down, we face dire financial consequences. Bills begin to pile up, and many families, including mine, struggle to feed our children due to the lack of income. This situation is not only unfair but also represents a dereliction of duty by our elected officials, who swore an oath to uphold and protect the Constitution upon entering office.
Government funding deadlocks are not new, and their consequences are severe. In 2019, the government shut down for a record 35 days, affecting 800,000 workers nationwide. Each shutdown costs the U.S. economy an estimated $1.2 billion per week, according to the Congressional Budget Office. This irresponsibility is not just an inconvenience; it's a threat to the well-being of countless Americans.
When they fail to reach an agreement on funding, members of the House of Representatives, Senate, and Congress often take extended breaks or vacations, leaving essential workers and the rest of the nation in limbo. This is akin to "playing politics" while ordinary citizens bear the consequences. Instead of taking breaks, they should commit to staying in session until an agreement is reached. This accountability is not only necessary but overdue.
The solution is simple and actionable: require our elected officials to remain at work and in session during funding stalemates. This policy will not only expedite resolutions but also convey a message of responsibility and integrity from those who hold our nation's highest offices. They should be working to find a solution, not engaging in posturing and abandoning their duties.
Join us in demanding change. Our voices, collectively, can urge Congress to act responsibly and prioritize the needs of the American people over political games. Let's ensure that no essential worker, or any American citizen, has to endure the hardships caused by irresponsible governance.
Sign this petition to hold our government accountable and demand that Congress commits to staying in session during government funding deadlocks, ensuring they face the urgency and responsibility they owe to us all.
