Artificial intelligence is moving faster than the rules meant to keep it safe, and now the people building it are the ones raising the alarm. Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon resigned from the company, warning that "no other human activity poses this level of danger," according to a post on X. His colleague, Alignment Science Lead Evan Hubinger, went further, writing that AI insiders "really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans" and that he sees more than a 10% chance of catastrophe within a decade.

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey is listening. She's calling on President Trump and Congress to step up, saying, "AI has enormous potential, but we cannot let this technology move faster than our ability to keep people safe." She's right. When the engineers and executives building these systems are the ones pleading for oversight, ignoring them isn't caution, it's negligence.

This isn't a partisan issue. Protecting people from unchecked technology should matter whether you lean left, right, or somewhere in between. Every other powerful industry in this country operates under federal oversight. AI shouldn't be the exception simply because it's new or because it's profitable.

Congress has the power to require independent safety evaluations, set clear rules for how AI systems are tested before release, and create real accountability when companies ignore the risks. Waiting for a catastrophe before acting would be a failure of basic governance.
