One afternoon, I found myself at a busy bus terminal in Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a hungry baby in tow and no appropriate space to chest feed him due to the bathroom being out of order for at least two weeks now. As I cautiously inquired about a private area where I could feed my son and change his diaper, a staff member astoundingly suggested I do so "on the roof." This response was not just impractical but also dismissive of the basic needs of parents and caregivers. People have told me to pump, or cover up, along with just laying something down on the floor to change him. Germs travel!! As well as I’m not going to be draping a blanket over myself and my son in 30°+ Weather when most buildings don’t have a working AC. And not everyone gets to experience the privilege of pumping when their child feeds so often. I'm not alone in this experience. Many parents throughout Halifax struggle with the same issue: the lack of dedicated, sanitary, and private spaces for chestfeeding and diaper changing in public buildings. This basic need is crucial for family convenience, child health, and overall public wellbeing. Public spaces including malls, libraries, bus terminals, and government offices should be inclusive and accommodating for parents and guardians. This petition calls on the municipal authorities of Halifax, Nova Scotia, to mandate that public buildings have suitable, safe, and private areas designated specifically for these purposes. We already have examples to follow: cities like Vancouver and Toronto have begun integrating family-friendly areas into their public spaces, setting standards that Halifax can adopt. Statistics from the Canadian Breastfeeding Foundation emphasize that nearly 90% of new parents initiate breastfeeding after birth, yet many face significant barriers in public settings. Such obstacles discourage breastfeeding in public, detracting from its well-established benefits for both parent and child. According to Public Health Canada, chestfeeding not only promotes better health for the child but also contributes to the parent's mental and physical wellbeing. The importance of this initiative is substantial. Dedicated chestfeeding and diaper changing areas would create a more inclusive and supportive environment for families, reduce stress on parents, and uphold the dignity and accessibility rights of every citizen in Halifax. It is a commonsense step toward creating a community where everyone can feel welcome and safe.
