Require candidates to be born in the U.S. to run for office
The Issue
In recent years, I've noticed a trend that's deeply concerning. We have individuals who were not born in the United States running for public office. While I respect their drive and dedication, I firmly believe that it is only fair for these positions of power to be held by those who are not just citizens, but were born here. This helps ensure that our leaders have a deep and intrinsic understanding of our nation's unique cultural values, history, and challenges from birth.
The intent of this petition is not to exclude or diminish the contributions of naturalized citizens. Rather, it's to advocate for a system where political leaders have an innate and lifelong connection to the land and its people from the very start of their life. This can help us maintain a unified and authentic representation in our government, ensuring that those who make policies affecting millions have experienced the American way of life from cradle to adulthood.
Currently, U.S. laws allow any citizen, born or naturalized, to run for many political offices. However, positions such as the President or Vice President already have a "natural-born citizen" requirement. Extending this requirement to all public office positions could safeguard the integrity of our political system. Doing so would reduce the chances of individuals exploiting the system without a foundational understanding of the American populace's needs and values.
