Require Canadian Government to Prioritize Animal Care and Wildlife Conservation Funding

The Issue

As a dedicated animal activist, I have seen first-hand the devastating circumstances facing many animals in Canada - be they domestic or wild. Everyday, these animals are injured, abandoned, or killed due to a lack of consistent and unified action. Private organizations, filled to the brim with compassionate volunteers, are fighting a long, solitary battle, striving to save these animals. Despite their courage and selflessness, they stand at a critical point where they can no longer sustain the fight without governmental support.

I firmly believe that the Canadian Government at the Federal, Provincial, and Municipal levels must treat wildlife conservation and animal care as essential components of their annual budgets. Our government should reflect our collective desire to protect and fund the causes that touch our hearts. This should not be fully dependent on individual philanthropy and the determined efforts of volunteers and fundraisers.

According to the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies, approximately 81,000 cats and 29,000 dogs were admitted to shelters alone in 2017. This alarming statistic does not account for wild animals, injured or abandoned in Canada's vast natural landscapes. The current system of long-term wildlife protection and animal care is severely fragmented, and relies heavily on the goodwill of individual citizens and not-for-profit organizations.

I urge the Canadian government to embed animal care and wildlife conservation within detailed, legislation, budgets, and enforcement mechanisms. If elected officials want to maintain the trust and support of their constituents, they must demonstrate a concrete commitment to the protection of animals and wildlife - without limitations or reservations.

Sign this petition to demand that the Canadian Government improve the nation’s wildlife and animal protection policies by making animal care and wildlife conservation integral financial commitments at all levels of governance.
