The Issue

My mother, who is nonverbal due to dementia, was a victim of abuse at her nursing home. This heart-wrenching experience has compelled me to advocate for better protection for the elderly residing in nursing homes. Too often, the voices of our most vulnerable citizens go unheard, and their suffering goes unnoticed. It is a responsibility we must shoulder to ensure they are treated with dignity, respect, and care.

Nursing homes are meant to be safe havens where our loved ones can receive the care and support they need. However, reports of abuse, neglect, and mistreatment continue to surface, highlighting the urgent need for reform to protect those who cannot defend themselves due to their age or disability. I believe that installing surveillance cameras in the hallways of nursing homes can serve as a deterrent to potential abuse and provide evidence in cases of misconduct.

According to the World Health Organization, elder abuse is a serious problem affecting millions of older people worldwide. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) also estimates that about one in ten people aged 60 and older who live in the community experience abuse. Unfortunately, those living in care facilities are often at even greater risk.

By installing cameras in nursing home hallways, we can create a safer environment for residents by holding caregivers accountable for their actions. Not only will this initiative help deter potential abusers, but it will also provide families with peace of mind knowing there is a mechanism in place to protect their loved ones. Privacy concerns are already addressed in many countries where such measures have been successfully implemented, and clear guidelines can ensure that residents' rights are respected while security is enhanced.

To make this change possible, I'm calling on state and local governments to mandate the installation of surveillance cameras in all nursing home hallways. We need policies in place that prioritize the safety and well-being of our seniors without delay.

Join me in demanding protection for our elderly and disabled community members. Your signature can make a significant difference in safeguarding those who need it most. Please sign this petition and help us ensure that justice, care, and compassion reach every corner of our nursing homes.
