The Issue

Every parent deserves the peace of mind that their child is safe and well-cared for at school. My daughter, who is in a wheelchair, has sadly come home with undeniable marks that indicate signs of abuse. This is every parent's nightmare, and it should not be taken lightly.

In Indiana, special needs resource rooms are spaces meant to offer additional support to our children, ensuring they receive the tailored education and care they require. These rooms should always be safe havens, not places of potential harm. But the lack of oversight leaves a gap where incidents, whether they are unintentional or deliberate, can go unnoticed and unaddressed.

Implementing video and audio recording in all special needs resource rooms provides an additional layer of accountability and security. These cameras would allow parents to verify the details of an incident, should they suspect inappropriate treatment or care. Not only does this protect the children, but it also protects teachers and staff from false accusations. Moreover, access to these recordings can be pivotal when addressing any discrepancies or inconsistencies in reports regarding a child's wellbeing.

Statistics show that children with special needs are at higher risk of abuse, often because they might not be able to communicate effectively about their experiences. In fact, according to the National Disability Rights Network, children with disabilities are three to four times more likely to be victims of abuse than their non-disabled peers.

By mandating video and audio coverage, we can foster an environment where parents, educators, and administrators work together with transparency and trust. It's a proactive step towards making sure no child falls through the cracks and every parent can rest assured about their child's day-to-day experiences.

Join me in calling on the Indiana Department of Education to require cameras in special needs resource rooms across the state. Let's stand together to protect our children and provide a safe, nurturing environment for their learning and growth. Please sign this petition to show your support and help drive this important change.
