Require cameras in all classrooms with non-verbal children

Require cameras in all classrooms with non-verbal children
The Issue
Our community has been shocked by disturbing allegations at my daughter's school. A non-verbal 14-year-old girl was allegedly a victim of sexual assault which was witnessed and reported by the classroom teacher. A year ago an aide was arrested for holding a child under water. Despite these serious accusations, the aide was found not guilty and still remains employed at the school. These incidents have left many parents, including myself, deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of our children, especially those who are non-verbal and or limited in their verbal abilities and unable to communicate if something is wrong.
These incidents are only two of many that happen in schools every year. Several months ago, Salmon River Central School District made headlines when photos of a wooden box that was used to confine students circulated the internet.
This troubling reality highlights a critical need for transparent measures that can protect all students, especially the most vulnerable. One effective solution to enhance the safety of non-verbal children in schools is the installation of cameras in classrooms. These cameras will ensure that any inappropriate or harmful behavior is caught on tape, providing indisputable evidence that can be used for investigations and safeguarding our children.
Research has shown that video surveillance can be a powerful deterrent against misconduct. Schools in Texas piloted similar programs, resulting in a significant decrease in incidents. Not only does this protect students, but it also serves as a safeguard for teachers and staff, ensuring that any false allegations are swiftly addressed.
We understand that privacy is a concern. However, with appropriate guidelines and access restrictions, these cameras will only be reviewed when there is a reported issue, balancing privacy with protection. Importantly, schools must prioritize safety and transparency whenever public funding is used to ensure that they comply with the highest standards of student protection.
By mandating cameras in classrooms with non-verbal students and students who cannot fully express themselves, we can provide parents with peace of mind, knowing their children are safe when they're not there to protect them.
Join me in demanding that schools receiving public funding be required to have cameras in all classrooms where there is at least one non-verbal child. Let's work together to create a safer environment for all children. Sign this petition to voice your support for this crucial initiative.
