The Issue

Learning at Boston City College has become increasingly challenging due to the recent switch to online-only textbooks. For students like me, this transition has not been smooth, and it comes with consequences for our educational experience. This petition aims to restore the availability of hardcover textbooks and provide students with the option to choose between physical and digital materials.

Staring for extended periods at a screen is detrimental not only to eye health, causing strain, but it also significantly hampers the ability to focus and retain information. Multiple studies have corroborated these effects, citing reduced concentration and comprehension when information is consumed digitally versus in print. The tactile experience of holding a book, flipping through pages, and the ability to annotate physically can enhance learning retention and comprehension effectively.

Moreover, this sudden shift to digital-only resources was implemented without gauging student preferences or considering individual learning needs. At the heart of effective education is the notion of accessibility and inclusivity, ensuring every student can access resources in a manner that complements their personal learning style. By ensuring access to physical textbooks, Boston City College can foster a more inclusive educational environment, enhancing student satisfaction and academic performance.

Another pressing issue is the inequality this decision has caused. Not all students are equipped with the required digital devices or reliable internet access, making the switch unfair and exclusionary. Textbooks should not be a privilege but a right, accessible in various formats to suit different needs and circumstances.

We recognize the advantages of digital resources, such as their portability and environmentally friendly nature. However, a balanced approach that respects diversity in learning preferences is necessary. We urge Boston City College to consider the varying needs of its student population and bring back physical textbooks as an option. Providing both digital and physical formats ensures that all students can access texts in a way that is most beneficial to them.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for the right to choose the mode of learning that best suits an individual's needs. It’s time to ensure every student at Boston City College can thrive academically with access to the most conducive learning materials for them.
