The Issue

I am writing this petition with a heavy heart and personal pain, as a victim of Bishop Sarah Mullally's negligent actions. I have suffered from her inability to handle my complaints with the Christian compassion and professionalism that one would expect from a leader within the Church of England. My experience is not isolated; it reflects a broader, systemic issue that has already had tragic consequences. - That of "Cover up the faults of a bishop" - whatever the cost - because they cannot be seen to be wrong.

Revd Alan Griffin took his life 08.11.2020 after a prolonged period of suffering, resulting from the false allegations of a sexual nature, and the Safeguarding Failures, Breach of GDPR revealing his medical HIV condition with two attempts at suicide,  and the lack of proper pastoral care and professional response from Bishop Sarah Mullally. She should have taken great care that - after two suicide attempts - that she did not provoke another that could be fatal. This was forseeable, and there is clear negligence, and no preventative action or support of the victim. This time he succeeded. He lies in his coffin because of the safeguarding failure.

His story, heart-wrenching as it is, highlights the serious deficiencies in handling sensitive issues within the diocese led by Bishop Mullally. As Chief Nursing Officer for the National Health Service she was the Safeguarding lead with full responsibility: she cannot claim to be ignorant of correct procedure - and should not have needed to learn lessons about how to handle such matters. Where is the Risk Assessment ?

These failures to safeguard and protect the vulnerable are not minor oversights, but grave errors with debilitating consequences, leading to an irreversible tragedy of the death of an elderly priest who was vulnerable. Is is true that she stated Revd Alan Griffin was under Police Investigation ? Upon learning of this he could cope no longer and took his own life.

The Coroner stated that the allegations were false but Sarah Mullally treated them as facts of true sexual misdemeanours, and did not take the trouble to investigate them before passing on the File of falsity.

No Apology - and saying "lessons learnt" - will restore him to life and health.

There is a direct cause (by personal actions and failures) that led to his death.

The Notice of Prevention of Future Death by Mary Hassell, Coroner, 02.07.2021 is on-line and must be read. Effectively she asks - "who caused this death ?".

The major Court Case of Regina v Broughton 18.08.2020 elucudates six points (requirements) that can lead to a conviction of Manslaughter by Gross Negligence. Each of these points can be answered and proved by reference to the facts that led the death of Revd Alan Griffin.

The Church of England is an institution that should model integrity, compassion, and responsibility. Its leaders must be held accountable for their actions, especially when they lead to detrimental outcomes for the individuals they are supposed to support and protect. The passing of Revd Alan Griffin is a poignant reminder of what is at stake and the urgent need for change. NOW !

A number of bishops have had to step down for minor or paper mistake safeguarding offences (victims see these as personal and very hurtful, as well as serious) - BUT - how much more serious are the failures that led to a death ? There can be no double standard to protect bishops when priests are removed from office for failure to report a sex offender in the congregation (Chelmsford diocese a week ago).

No bishop has ever had to face a Clergy Discipline - archbishop Welby and Lambeth Palace (now) for Sarah Mullally.

To restore trust in the church and its leadership, I urge you to join me in calling for the resignation of Bishop Sarah Mullally from all positions of bishopric and priesthood within the Church of England. This action is necessary not only for the healing of those affected directly, but also for the reputation and future of the Church itself. By doing so, we send a clear message that the Church must prioritize the safety, wellbeing, and spiritual nurturing of its community over any individual leader's position.
