The Issue

My company, Toronto Island SUP, just launched a bike rental service. This venture was meant to finance the much-needed repair and restoration of a cherished 100-year-old community-centered building. However, Bike Share Toronto placed a station with a full-time attendant right across the street. As a result, our sales have plummeted to nearly zero.

Like many local businesses and residents, we are deeply concerned about the impact of Bike Share Toronto stations on our community. We believe that the placement of these stations should be considerate of the existing community dynamics, ensuring they don't add to congestion in busy areas, harm local businesses, or diminish the enjoyment of park users and residents.

In the case of Ward's Island and other parts of Old Toronto, consultation with local stakeholders and communities should be a mandatory requirement before establishing new bike share stations. We are offering a compromise and a new location for the bike share station in Ward's Island, and we want our voices to be heard.

Cities all over the world are striving to find a balance between innovation and community needs. Toronto should be no different. By incorporating feedback from local businesses and residents, we can ensure that bike share services enhance community life rather than disrupt it.

We urge Bike Share Toronto and local authorities to adopt a consultative approach before placing new bike stations. Let's work together to choose locations that benefit all community members, support local businesses, and create a harmonious environment for everyone to enjoy.

Please sign this petition to require Bike Share Toronto to consult with local communities before deciding on bike station locations and to not allow them in places which harm local businesses and existing communities. Let's ensure our voices are heard and our community flourishes.
