The Issue

Imagine receiving the devastating news that your loved one has died under horrifying conditions—alone and scared, without the medical care they desperately needed, in a place where they were supposed to be safe. My friend's mother experienced this nightmare. She died while detoxing in Benton County Jail, having received no medical treatment. Her daughter heard about the situation not from the authorities but through a police scanner, only learning of her mother's transport after the fact. The investigator, Andrew Smith, has since ceased communication with her, leaving the family in distress and without the closure they deserve.

Sadly, this is far from an isolated incident. I know of at least five other individuals who have also lost their lives while detained in the Benton County Jail, under similar circumstances where basic human rights and medical care were denied. Our community cannot continue to tolerate such neglect and lack of accountability. The Benton County Sheriff's Department is entrusted with the motto 'to protect and serve,' but how can they claim to uphold this mission when inmates are losing their lives to negligence?

Furthermore, the fear that domestic abuse victims face in seeking help is painfully real. Many live in terror, not from their abusers alone, but from the possibility of being unjustly incarcerated when they desperately need protection and support. This systemic failure not only undermines public trust but also puts countless lives at risk.

We demand immediate reforms in Benton County's detention policies and practices. The Sheriff's Department must ensure proper medical care for all inmates, especially those suffering from substance withdrawal, and implement transparent communication with families involved in these tragic incidents. A thorough investigation into these deaths, including my friend's tragic loss, should be re-opened and investigators must re-engage with affected families to provide them the transparency and answers they deserve.

Additionally, the department must develop robust procedures that allow domestic abuse victims to report their situations without the fear of punitive consequences. Community safety depends on a responsive and compassionate law enforcement agency that respects human dignity and upholds justice through its actions.

Sign this petition to demand accountability and change from the Benton County Sheriff’s Department. Every voice counts, and together, we can ensure that the jail becomes a place where safety and rights are undeniable, not an environment of fear and neglect. Let us honor those we have lost and prevent future tragedies.
