Servers at Olive Garden make under minimum wage with roughly a 3% tip out, we have to share tables over 7 people and only have a 3 table section. When large parties come in they likely take up most of our tables if not all for many hours, so if we don’t get an adequate tip it leads to us not making money on other tables or the party, and losing money tipping out. Requiring auto gratuity ensures that servers are paid for the work that they do including preparing and bringing out soups, salads, bread, drinks, and refills and more. Darden claims that they cannot give us auto gratuity because it would be considered a “service fee” and servers would get the money with their pay check and Darden would have to pay taxes on it, which they do not want to do, they would rather we walk home with nothing than it coming out of their pockets. Servers generally would prefer to have a guaranteed tip that comes weekly with their pay check than to not be tipped at all. There is no reason why there is no auto gratuity in a restaurant where the servers provide so much and receive so little.
