Require ASWB to reform social work licensing exams

Require ASWB to reform social work licensing exams
The Issue
The current clinical licensing exam process for social workers places unnecessary financial and procedural burdens on qualified professionals entering the field. As a candidate myself, I am all too familiar with the challenges that come with preparing for, and taking, the American Social Workers Board (ASWB) exam. Candidates are required to pay approximately $345 per exam attempt. This fee places a significant financial strain on many, especially when if they do not pass, they must pay the full amount again—without access to detailed feedback that would support improvement.
Exacerbating the issue, practice exams provided do not consistently reflect the real exam. This mismatch creates an added layer of stress and uncertainty for test-takers, who are already balancing numerous responsibilities. Without accurate and representative practice materials, candidates are forced to rely on inadequate and potentially misleading resources.
Furthermore, the ASWB provides limited performance feedback. Candidates often walk away from the exam unsure of where exactly they went wrong and how they can improve for future attempts. This lack of feedback prolongs the process and is fundamentally unfair to examinees who have invested time and money into their careers.
Another concern is the lack of transparency. Currently, there is no public reporting of pass rates by attempt number, leaving candidates in the dark about their relative performance and success rates. Greater transparency in exam results could provide much-needed context and alleviate some of the anxiety experienced by test-takers.
Therefore, we are calling on the American Social Workers Board to implement the following changes: reduce exam fees for repeat test-takers by at least 30%, provide accurate and representative practice materials, ensure access to meaningful exam feedback, publicly report pass rates by attempt number, and increase transparency regarding how exam fees are utilized.
These measures are necessary to ensure that the exam process is fair, transparent, and supportive of social workers who are just beginning their careers. By implementing these changes, the ASWB can ensure that qualified professionals are not discouraged from entering the field due to preventable obstacles.
Sign this petition if you believe in a fairer, more transparent process for aspiring social workers, and in supporting the professional growth of those dedicated to serving our communities.
