Require Arkansas to disclose domestic violence history

The Issue

I am a survivor of domestic violence, enduring years of abuse at the hands of someone who continually evaded true justice, facing no consequences. Alarmingly, Arkansas ranks 10th in the United States for domestic violence incidents, a troubling statistic that reflects not just on the numbers, but on the lives irreparably changed. We must do more to protect those at risk and offer them the tools needed to make informed decisions about their safety and their futures.

In Arkansas, current laws do not adequately safeguard individuals against repeat offenders of domestic violence. Often, these individuals receive nothing more than a slap on the wrist. Releasing risk-related information about someone’s violent past could be a crucial step in helping current and former intimate partners make informed decisions. This can prevent additional abuse or even save lives by taking preventative measures.

Abusers often exhibit a pattern of behavior. If they have a history of violence, it is likely to continue, and the stakes are incredibly high—the next victim may not survive. Such transparency can save lives and afford individuals the opportunity to protect themselves and their children from potential harm.

By requiring Arkansas police to disclose specific risk-related information, current or former intimate partners can assess the threat level and take precautions. This is not only about awareness but also about reclaiming the right to safety—empowering those who are most vulnerable. The data clearly shows that awareness and early intervention can significantly reduce the instances of domestic violence.

The State of Arkansas must implement a policy for police to share verified domestic violence history with those who need it most. This information is not just a matter of curiosity—it's a critical component of personal safety and accountability. By adopting this policy, we can deter future offenses and demonstrate that the cycle of abuse can be broken. Lives depend on this transparency.

Please join me in advocating for this vital change by signing this petition. Together, let’s ensure that safety and awareness are placed at the forefront of our community efforts to combat domestic violence.
