The Issue

Our community has a pivotal opportunity to enhance the safety and functionality of US 29 through College Park. As a resident who witnessed a similar situation where the chance for sidewalks on Washington Road was missed during the TSPLOST East Point improvements, I'm determined to ensure that we proactively secure the right investments for US 29.

The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) funding for US 29 is imminent, and it's imperative that we advocate for the transformation of the road from its current 4-lane configuration to a more efficient 3-lane setup, comprising of one northbound and two southbound lanes. This change will significantly bolster safety for both drivers and pedestrians, reducing potential hazards and creating a community-friendly environment.

Many of us recognize that missed opportunities can have lasting impacts on our neighborhoods. This project has been supported by many residents, businesses, and organizations.  GDOT needs College Park Council to step up and finalize this support.  If they don't, the outcome will continue to be a more perilous and less accessible community. By pushing for this lane adjustment now, we can ensure that US 29 supports safe transportation while accommodating the projected traffic flow more effectively.

Statistics reveal that lane reduction, a common practice known as "road diet," has been successful in reducing crashes by up to 47% (according to the Federal Highway Administration). By employing this approach, we’re not only addressing immediate safety concerns but also promoting a sustainable growth model for College Park.

What about sidewalk enhancements and bike lanes? This is Step On for any of those improvements.

Support this petition to require the College Park Council to approve a resolution for the reconfiguration of US 29. Together, we can make our roads safer and seize this crucial opportunity for positive change. Sign this petition to show your commitment to safety and smart town planning. Every signature counts towards driving impactful action for our community.

Main Street Lane Configuration & Safety Analysis

(College Park, GA)

Executive Summary: This report evaluates the four-lane configuration of Main Street and recommends a three-lane 'road diet' to improve safety and align with GDOT standards.

Key Findings: The road historically supported three lanes at ~36 feet width. Current four-lane sections create unsafe conditions due to narrow 9 foot lanes.

Standards: This resolution is suggesting 10 feet wide lanes. GDOT/AASHTO recommend 11 foot lanes. Current conditions fall below these standards.

Traffic Data: ~14,658 vehicles/day—well within range for a 3-lane roadway.

Safety Evidence: FHWA studies show 19–47% crash reduction after road diets.

Proposal: Convert to one northbound and two southbound lanes, maintain turn lane at Virginia Ave, add buffers and safety features.

Conclusion: The change is low-cost, data-supported, and improves safety for drivers and pedestrians.
