The Issue

For the past 25 years, I have witnessed the invaluable role that stray dogs play in safeguarding public and government spaces during off-hours, such as in the city of Chennai. These large institutions, which lie mostly unoccupied from 6 pm to 10 am, are often left vulnerable to misuse for criminal activities. I’ve seen firsthand how stray dogs, with their natural vigilance, serve as deterrents against trespassers and individuals with malicious intentions, thus protecting these important areas from becoming havens for undesirable activities.

We are all aware that if the bees which we hardly notice are destroyed , we will starve for food. Similarly dogs are our unnoticed warriors and security force. Removing them is a big threat to our law and order and destroying one of our best God created environment resource.

Currently, the regulations concerning dogs in public buildings seem to favor those who exploit these spaces for their illicit needs, aiming to keep them unoccupied and free from any watchdog presence. This oversight encourages misuse of these premises, risking their transformation into hubs for activities like drug dealing or other criminal endeavors. In contrast, having a presence of dogs helps maintain security and ward off those who might otherwise see these areas as convenient hideaways.

Making public buildings dog-friendly is not just a matter of compassion but also a strategic move to enhance safety and security. Dogs provide a cost-effective supplement to existing security measures, utilizing their instincts to alert authorities to potential dangers. Moreover, by officially acknowledging and encouraging the presence of dogs in these spaces, we validate the efforts of countless animal caretakers who have seen the benefits over decades.

I urge policymakers and authorities in Chennai, and beyond, to reconsider the current laws and take action towards making all public and governmental buildings dog-friendly. Such a change acknowledges the symbiotic relationship between the community and stray dogs, leveraging the animals' natural capacities to maintain order and deter criminal activity.
