Require all high schools in the St. Louis Public School District to start at 8:30
Require all high schools in the St. Louis Public School District to start at 8:30
The Issue
Research over the years has consistently shown that later school start times can significantly benefit adolescents' health, well-being, and academic performance. Adolescents are biologically programmed to go to sleep and wake up later than adults, making early school start times a major barrier to getting sufficient sleep. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), adolescents need between 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night for optimal health, yet more than two-thirds of American high school students report getting fewer than the recommended amount.
Early start times contribute to sleep deprivation, which is linked to a host of problems including obesity, depression, and decreased cognitive functioning. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the CDC, recognizing these detrimental effects, have both recommended that middle and high schools start no earlier than 8:30 AM to better align with the natural sleep cycles of adolescents.
In St. Louis, the majority of high schools within the public school district start before 8:00 AM, leaving students vulnerable to these negative outcomes. By mandating a start time of 8:30 AM or later, the St. Louis Public School District can make significant strides in improving the physical, mental, and academic well-being of its students. Not only does this change support healthier sleep habits, but studies have also shown that later start times are associated with improvements in attendance, graduation rates, and standardized test scores.
Many districts nationwide have already successfully implemented later start times with positive results. For instance, after adjusting start times to 8:30 AM, Edina School District in Minnesota reported improved mood and energy levels among students, as well as a rise in its academic performance indicators.
We urge the leadership of the St. Louis Public School District to consider this evidence and take immediate action to revise school start times. This simple policy change has the potential to yield substantial benefits for students, setting them up for a healthier and more successful future.
Support our students' health and education by signing this petition to require all high schools in the St. Louis Public School District to start at 8:30 AM.
