We believe that anyone seeking elected government office in Canada should have been born and raised in Canada, with a meaningful firsthand understanding of Canadian society, history, laws, official languages, institutions, traditions, and civic values.

Currently, Canadian law allows people who were born and raised outside Canada to seek elected office. While immigration and diversity are part of Canadian society, those entrusted with making decisions on behalf of Canadians should have a deep connection to the country they seek to represent—not simply through citizenship, but through having experienced Canadian life from childhood.

For many Canadians, this issue is personal. Growing up in Canada means learning about our communities, schools, public institutions, holidays, regional differences, and democratic traditions through everyday experience. It means understanding the practical realities families face, from navigating the education and healthcare systems to participating in local community life. These experiences help shape a shared understanding of what it means to live in Canada—an understanding that cannot be gained solely through citizenship or a short period of residence.

This concern extends beyond federal politics. Municipal councils, provincial governments, school boards, MPs, MLAs, and other elected officials make decisions that directly affect our communities.

Decisions that affect Canadians are made every day by municipal councils, school boards, provincial legislatures, and Parliament. These decisions influence everything from property taxes and public transit to education policy and healthcare delivery. Because elected officials at every level have substantial influence over Canadian life, supporters believe the same eligibility standard should apply across all levels of government.

Canada is a diverse country, but integration and shared civic understanding matter. Canadians should be able to expect their elected representatives to understand the country’s official languages, democratic institutions, laws, history, regional differences, and the values that shape Canadian life.

This petition calls for electoral reform requiring candidates for elected government office in Canada to have been born and raised in Canada and to meet clearly defined requirements demonstrating a meaningful connection to Canadian civic life.

We also call for lawmakers to establish appropriate transition provisions for current officeholders if these eligibility requirements are adopted.

This is about ensuring that those entrusted with representing Canadians have a genuine, lifelong connection to the country and the communities they serve.
