As a family currently travelling Australia with our two beloved dogs, an Aussie bulldog and a Rottweiler, we have experienced firsthand the discrimination against certain dog breeds by caravan parks that claim to be dog-friendly. Despite being well-behaved and loved members of our family, our dogs have been rejected by numerous parks due to their weight or breed.

This is not just about us; it's about every pet owner who has faced this kind of discrimination. It's time for all dog-friendly caravan parks to live up to their name and accept all breeds without bias.

According to the Australian Veterinary Association, breed alone is not a reliable predictor of aggressive behaviour. Instead, factors such as socialisation, training methods and the treatment of the dog are far more influential (Australian Veterinary Association). This means that any policy which discriminates based on breed or size is not only unfair but also unfounded.

We call upon local authorities and park owners across Australia to review their policies regarding pet acceptance in caravan parks. We ask them to consider evidence-based practices rather than perpetuating stereotypes about certain breeds.
